Preventing Summer Sun Spots

Posted By Nicole

If you tend to be prone to hyperpigmentation, you have probably noticed spots becoming more visible now that it is summer. Dark spots can be rather challenging to reduce the appearance of but these skin care tips will help your skin keep an even tone all the way through summer.

Wear Sunscreen

The number one cause of premature aging is sun exposure. By not protecting your skin from UV light causes damage to your skin which creates dark spots on your skin. The fact about sunscreen is not necessarily the SPF number but how often and how generously it is applied (but SPF 30 is the minimum you should be wearing).

If you have oily skin it can be pretty challenging to find a sunscreen that doesn't feel greasy and clog your pores. Our best-selling EltaMD UV Clear Facial Hydrator (SPF 46) is ideal for oily, acneic skin types. It's very lightweight, oil-free formula leaves no residue on skin's surface.

Keep your skin Cool

When your skin becomes heated it causes an increase in melanin activity, so it is important to keep your skin temperature low. Try keeping your skincare products in the fridge so that they have a nice cooling effect when you apply them. For an extra cool-down treat, try keeping a gel based mask (that also reduces dark spots!) in your fridge and apply a thin coat over your face, leaving it on for 15 mins. Not only will it really cool you down after a long day outside, it will replenish your skin with much-needed moisture.

Exfoliate gently.

The key way to reduce the appearance of dark spots once they have appeared is to use exfoliating products such as facial scrubs exfoliating acids such as Glycolic acid found in DCL Glycolic Pads.

When used regularly, exfoliants help to break down the pigmented skin cells thus lessening their appearance. During the summer months be careful how frequently you are using exfoliating products because over exfoliating can cause your skin to become more sensitive to the sun and cause more spots!

Bump up your SPF

Researchers have recently determined that using skin care products with both vitamins C and E underneath your sunscreen provides 4x the protection of sunscreen alone! To bump up your SPF, use a vitamin C+E serum under sunscreen. An added bonus to the extra protection is that Vitamin C is a proven skin lightener, so using Vitamin C+E treatments works well for breaking down stubborn pigmentation.

Get a Monthly Facial

Professional facials give your skin better results then using home skin care products. It's important even through the summer to keep in mind prevention! Your aesthetician will load up your skin with antioxidants and moisture, so you won't be rushing in the fall to reverse the damage. See the custom facial treatments offered at Eternal Skin Care.
